Welcome Back to School

August 1, 2013
On behalf of the Florida School Counselor Association (FSCA), I want to wish you a warm Welcome Back to School.  This is always an exciting time that brings renewed opportunities to make a difference for children and their future.  The Florida School Counselor Association (FSCA) is excited to begin a new year and continue to serve every school counselor across the state.  Did you know that FSCA is the only association in our state that represents and supports school counselors and our critical work to ensure student school successes. So what does FSCA do to support you?  Below I’ve highlighted just two of the various benefits FSCA provides to make your work life better.
I. Advocacy. Three years ago, FSCA set a goal to address the needs of all students, promote professional excellence, and advocate for closing the achievement gap between groups of students.  We are making progress. On June 14, 2013, Governor Scott approved that our official title be, Certified School Counselors”.  Yet, advocacy has no off season and efforts continue again this year for passage of a bill to ensure that EVERY student has access to a school counselor for academic, career and personal/social development. (see link for more information)
A critical key to passage of this bill is membership!! Membership speaks volumes to legislators as they consider the future of our profession!! A strong membership conveys that we are committed to our profession and to our work with students.
I am emailing to ask that you renew your membership. If you will, please take a minute now to go to our website and renew your membership using this email address (http://www.123signup.com/renew?org=fla-schoolcounselor). If you believe that your membership status is in error, please contact Claire Cousins, FSCA Executive Assistant, to look into it (ctcousins@aol.com).

II. The Convention October 31 to November 2, 2013 are the dates of the 2013 Convention that will be held at Hilton, St. Petersburg.  This year’s keynote speakers, exhibitors, and session presenters will afford rich knowledge, skills, and practices that are sure to advance your daily work with students. For Convention information, registration: http://www.fla-schoolcounselor.org/2013-convention.
In advance, thank you for your FSCA membership that supports efforts to strengthen our profession and make a difference for children.
My best wishes to you all for a productive, safe, healthy, and invigorating year, and I hope to see you at the 2013 Convention in St. Pete.
