Orton-Gillingham-based programs for students with learning disabilities

The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) has released eight new reports this week that review the research on Orton-Gillingham–based programs for students with learning disabilities:

 

·        Orton-Gillingham–based Strategies (Unbranded)–31 studies identified

·        Alphabetic Phonics–13 studies identified

·        Barton Reading & Spelling System®–13 studies identified

·        Fundations®–2 studies identified

·        Dyslexia Training Program–4 studies identified

·        Herman Method™–4 studies identified

·        Wilson Reading System®–28 studies identified

·        Project Read® Phonology–25 studies identified, 2 meet WWC standards

 

Orton-Gillingham teaching sessions are action oriented with auditory, visual, and kinesthetic elements reinforcing one another. Only research for Project Read® Phonology meets WWC evidence standards. This program was found to have no discernible effects on general reading achievement for students with learning disabilities. The research for the remaining programs above did not meet WWC evidence standards.
